Conventional dosage forms

Conventional dosage forms (CDF) are the traditional and most commonly used forms for the administration of pharmaceuticals and food supplements.

Among the most common conventional dosage forms are tablets, granulates, capsules, ointments, suppositories, creams, liquid solutions, and suspensions.
Most cosmetics are also administered in conventional dosage forms, as for example creams, gels and solutions.

Excipients in conventional dosage forms

Excipients in conventional dosage forms, are inert or nonactive substances which serve various essential functions and play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, efficacy, stability, absorption, and proper dosage of the active ingredient, within a dosage form that is suitable for the intended administration route and pharmaceutical use.

The choice of excipients and their concentration must be carefully considered during formulation and process development to ensure compatibility with the active ingredient, regulatory compliance, stability, processability and the achievement of the desired therapeutic outcome.

Development of CDFs encompasses excipient and process optimization, evaluation of drug release, quality control and stability testing for shelf life prediction.

We help you identifying formulations and processes

At our Department the Pharmaceutical Technology experts possess specific know-how in wet granulation, semisolid preparations for topical administration, suppositories and solutions.

Our experts can help identifying formulations and/or processes dedicated to customer needs (pharmaceutical, food supplements and cosmetics), by either performing exploratory formulation studies at the technology department labs or by providing consultancy at customer sites.
